Sri Lanka in July is the one month when the island’s weather splits cleanly in two. The south and west coasts are inside the south-west monsoon. The east coast is in its dry season, and the gap is not close.
Our own ten years of daily records put that gap at 0.8 heavy-rain days in Trincomalee against 8.7 in Galle for the same month. This guide is about what the difference means for a trip: which coast, what the heat does to a day, who else is travelling, and what July really costs.

Sri Lanka in July: the short answer
Go east. Trincomalee, Nilaveli, Pasikuda and Arugam Bay are dry, windy and hot in July, with between 0.8 and 1.4 heavy-rain days across the whole month at our three east-coast stations.
Skip the south and west if beach weather is the point. Galle records 28.6 rain days in July and 8.7 of them heavy, which is the wettest reading in our twelve-place set.
The hills are the compromise. Kandy and Ella stay green and cool, and Nuwara Eliya averages a daily maximum of 19.5 C, so pack a fleece for the last two nights of the trip.
Sri Lanka in July rewards the traveller who books the east coast first and the hills second.
Why July works on the east coast and fails on the south
Sri Lanka’s weather runs on two monsoons that take turns. From May to September the south-west monsoon pushes moist air onto the western and southern coasts. Those coasts face the wind and take the rain.
The east coast sits in the lee of the central highlands, and July is the middle of its dry window. The same wind that soaks Ratnapura has lost most of its moisture by the time it crosses to Batticaloa.
So the July decision is a coast decision. Pick the wrong coast and no amount of planning repairs it. Pick the right one and July is the most reliable beach month the east coast gets.
Sri Lanka in July is a coast choice, and the coast is decided by the monsoon rather than by taste.
Sri Lanka in July is a coast choice before it is anything else.
What Sri Lanka July weather actually does, place by place
We measure twelve places, and the table below is July only. It comes from 3,653 days per station between 2016 and 2025. Rain days count 1 mm or more, heavy days count 10 mm or more, and both are monthly averages.
| Place | Rain days | Heavy rain days | Mean daily max | Sunshine |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Trincomalee | 9.5 | 0.8 | 34.7 C | 10.1 h |
| Arugam Bay | 12.3 | 0.8 | 33.9 C | 10.3 h |
| Batticaloa | 12.3 | 1.4 | 34.7 C | 10.5 h |
| Jaffna | 11.3 | 0.7 | 30.8 C | 10.4 h |
| Anuradhapura | 11.4 | 1.2 | 32.7 C | 10.3 h |
| Ella | 16.0 | 2.1 | 27.7 C | 10.0 h |
| Kandy | 22.9 | 3.2 | 27.5 C | 9.8 h |
| Nuwara Eliya | 19.2 | 3.4 | 19.5 C | 9.4 h |
| Mirissa | 25.6 | 4.6 | 29.0 C | 10.2 h |
| Negombo | 26.3 | 4.9 | 28.7 C | 10.0 h |
| Colombo | 27.3 | 8.3 | 28.7 C | 9.8 h |
| Galle | 28.6 | 8.7 | 28.5 C | 10.2 h |
Read the sunshine column last. It barely moves, from 9.4 to 10.5 hours everywhere, so a sunshine forecast will not separate a good July day from a bad one.
The rain columns do the work. The east-coast places carry 0.8 to 1.4 heavy days against 8.3 in Colombo and 8.7 in Galle. That is a ten-fold difference in the weather you actually get for your money.
Sri Lanka in July is not uniform, and those two columns are why.
The heat is the real story
July on the east coast is not only dry, it is hot. Trincomalee and Batticaloa both average 34.7 C for the daily maximum, Arugam Bay 33.9 C, and Colombo 28.7 C in the same month.
Plan the day around that heat. Beach before 10:00 and after 15:30, shade or a vehicle in between, and water all day. Book a room with air conditioning and a fan, not one or the other.
Sri Lanka in July is hot inland as well, so treat the heat as part of the plan.
Rain days versus heavy rain days
Arugam Bay records 12.3 rain days in July and only 0.8 heavy ones. The first number reads as a wet month until you split it: most of those days are a shower that wets the sand for twenty minutes and moves on.
Mirissa shows the pattern in reverse. It has 25.6 rain days and 4.6 heavy ones, and the heavy days are the ones that close a beach for the afternoon.
Sri Lanka in July is easier to judge by heavy days than by rain days.

The Sri Lanka east coast season in July, coast by coast
The east coast season runs from roughly May to September, and July sits inside it at full strength from Trincomalee down to Pottuvil. The three stretches below behave differently enough to plan separately.
The Sri Lanka in July picture changes quickly as you move south down this coast.
The three stretches differ in water rather than in rain: a shallow bay at Pasikuda, a reef at Nilaveli and a point break at Arugam Bay. That decides who each place suits, and which one is full in the last week of July.
Sri Lanka in July is a water decision more than it is a weather decision.
Trincomalee and Nilaveli
Trincomalee records the fewest rain days of the three east-coast stations, 9.5 in July, with 0.8 of them heavy. It is also where the transport lands, with the rail line and the main road from Anuradhapura both reaching the town.
Nilaveli sits 13.6 km north, a 23-minute drive on our free-flow measurement, and it is the base for Pigeon Island. Go early: the sea is calmest before the afternoon wind builds, and the crossing is a short boat ride from the Nilaveli side.
Pasikuda and Batticaloa
Pasikuda is a shallow bay, so the water stays wadeable a long way out. That makes it the easiest east-coast stop for weak swimmers and for children, and it is the reason families cluster here rather than at Arugam Bay.
Batticaloa is 12.3 rain days and 1.4 heavy days in July. The town is a working place with a lagoon rather than a resort strip, which makes it a cheaper base and a less convenient one.
Arugam Bay and Pottuvil
Arugam Bay is a surf village, and the beach road fills up in the European summer. The main point break sits at the south end of the bay, and the road behind it is a line of guesthouses, board shacks and cafes.
We did not verify this year’s surf season dates, board hire rates or lesson prices, so treat any figure you are quoted as unverified. Pottuvil is the nearest town, 4.6 km and 6 minutes away on our measurement.

A ten-day Sri Lanka in July route, day by day
This route follows the season rather than the map. It spends its beach days in the east and takes the hill country on the way home, once the wet coast is behind you. Leg times are our own OSRM free-flow measurements taken on 30 October 2026. Add 25 to 40 per cent for real driving.
Sri Lanka in July suits this route because the beach days come first and the rain comes last. Every leg of this Sri Lanka in July route is measured rather than estimated.
Days 1 to 3: land, then the middle of the island
Land at Bandaranaike and drive to Colombo Fort for the first night, 39.8 km and 44 minutes on our measurement. Sri Lanka in July rewards an early start, so leave the city before 06:30 on day two.
Colombo Fort to Anuradhapura is 208.0 km and 3 hours 42 minutes free-flow, and Anuradhapura to Trincomalee is another 107.4 km and 1 hour 59 minutes. That is a long day, so most people break it at Anuradhapura for the night and see the sites at dusk.
Anuradhapura is worth the night rather than the day trip. The site is large, the light is better late, and starting from the town puts you on the Trincomalee road before the heat. Bicycles are the usual way around, and the distances inside the old city are short.
Sri Lanka in July needs an early start on the long driving days.
Days 4 and 5: Trincomalee and Nilaveli
Days four and five belong to the coast. Fort Frederick, the Koneswaram temple on the headland and the beach at Nilaveli fill them without rushing, and the sea is at its calmest in the morning.
Keep the afternoons loose. This is the part of the trip where the heat sets the schedule, and a 34.7 C average maximum is not a number you argue with.
Sri Lanka in July here means mornings on the water and afternoons indoors.
Days 6 and 7: Pasikuda and the quiet coast
Trincomalee to Pasikuda is 107.8 km and 2 hours 30 minutes on our measurement. Pasikuda is the pause in the route: shallow water, a long beach and very little to do besides swim and eat.
Two nights here is enough for most people. If you want one more stop, Batticaloa’s lagoon adds a different day without adding much distance.
Sri Lanka in July on this stretch is the quietest part of the trip.

Days 8 and 9: Arugam Bay
Pasikuda to Arugam Bay is 146.8 km and 2 hours 55 minutes, the longest single leg of the route. Go south through Pottuvil and the last stretch runs beside the lagoon.
Arugam Bay in July gives you two kinds of day. The morning is glassy and good for the water, and the afternoon brings wind and a chance of a short, hard shower. Neither ruins the day.
Sri Lanka in July at Arugam Bay is glass in the morning and wind after lunch.

Day 10: the hill country and home
Arugam Bay to Ella is 132.9 km and 2 hours 29 minutes, and Ella to Kandy is 135.9 km and 2 hours 44 minutes. That is the transition from 33.9 C to 27.7 C in one afternoon, and it is the most welcome drive of the trip.
From Kandy, Colombo Fort is 114.2 km and 2 hours 11 minutes, which makes an early train or an evening flight both workable. If you have the time, the hill-country line is the better way down.
Sri Lanka in July ends best in the cool of the hill country.

Who is actually in the country in July
July 2026 brought 196,807 arrivals, up 58.1 per cent on June’s 124,496 and 1.7 per cent below July 2025’s 200,212. The market mix is more useful than the total, because it tells you which coast will be full.
Sri Lanka in July 2026 recorded 196,807 arrivals, and the mix matters more than the total.
| Market | July 2026 arrivals | Index against its own nine-month mean |
|---|---|---|
| India | 44,547 | 0.92 |
| United Kingdom | 21,834 | 1.22 |
| Netherlands | 12,493 | 2.72 |
| China | 12,336 | 0.99 |
| France | 10,102 | 1.15 |
| Australia | 9,702 | 1.00 |
| Germany | 8,838 | 0.82 |
| Maldives | 5,757 | 1.69 |
| United States | 5,376 | 1.06 |
| Spain | 4,640 | 1.53 |
| Switzerland | 4,481 | 1.69 |
| Belgium | 4,196 | 2.50 |
The index is the column to read. The Netherlands arrives at 2.72 times its own average month and Belgium at 2.50, while Germany stays below its average at 0.82 and India sits at 0.92.
That mix is a school-holiday signature from northern Europe, and it explains why the east coast fills from the first week of July rather than from the middle. The data is from the tourism authority’s own country tables, which we read and parsed on 30 October 2026.
The school holiday squeeze on the coast
This is where the Sri Lanka school holiday season question gets confusing. July is busy because northern Europe is on holiday, not because the island’s own schools are closed.
We did not verify Sri Lankan government school term dates for 2026, so we will not tell you to avoid a domestic holiday we have not measured. What we can measure is the European overlap, and it is large.
For the Sri Lanka east coast in July, that overlap means Dutch, Belgian and Swiss families arriving in the same fortnight as the British summer break. Rooms on the Arugam Bay road and in Nilaveli are the first to go.
Which coast fills first is predictable from the same data. The east-coast beds that go first are the ones near a surf break or a shallow bay, so Nilaveli and Arugam Bay tighten before Trincomalee town does. If your dates are fixed, book the coast before the flights.
Sri Lanka in July is a European family month more than a domestic one.
What does Sri Lanka in July cost?
The honest answer is that we could not verify July 2026 room rates or airfares, so we will not quote a nightly figure we cannot trace. What we can say is where the money goes.
July prices the coast, not the island. East-coast rooms sit at their annual peak while the south and west are discounting to fill monsoon-season beds, and the inland sites cost what they cost in any other month.
Transport is the part you can plan now. Rail fares are set by class and distance rather than by season, so a July seat costs the same as a January one. The difference is availability, and that is a booking question rather than a price question.
To price it yourself, add three numbers: the east-coast room rate for your exact dates, the internal transport for the route you chose, and the two or three paid sites you actually want. Food and incidentals are a daily figure you control. That method will beat any nightly average we could have quoted, and it takes an hour.
What Sri Lanka in July costs depends on the coast you picked.
What to book first in July
Book in this order, because the availability runs out in this order:
- East-coast rooms for the peak fortnight, especially Nilaveli and the Arugam Bay beach road.
- Train seats on the hill-country line, which open 30 days before travel and close when full.
- A vehicle and driver for the long legs, which is cheaper booked as a whole route than as separate transfers.
- An ETA for every traveller, which is needed before boarding and is not sold at the airport.
The train rule matters most. The operator’s reservation FAQ says online seats open 30 days before travel and each leg needs its own reservation, so the Kandy to Ella run is gone first.
Sri Lanka in July bookings go wrong in the last fortnight, not the first.
What we could not verify
We would rather name the gaps than fill them with a guess:
- July 2026 hotel, villa and airfare prices. No rate we could read was traceable to a published tariff.
- Sri Lankan school term dates for 2026, which is why the holiday section above is written around the European calendar only.
- Surf season dates, board hire and lesson prices at Arugam Bay.
- National park permit rates and site entry fees, which the authorities did not publish in a confirmable form on the day we checked.
- The Department of Meteorology’s own July outlook. Its site did not respond, so nothing here quotes it.
The ETA rule is the one piece of paperwork to settle early. Every visitor needs one, and the official ETA portal lists the nationalities that get it free for 30 days.
The Sri Lanka in July figures on this page are measured numbers or named gaps.
Frequently asked questions about Sri Lanka in July
-
Is Sri Lanka in July a good time to visit?
Yes, if you go to the east coast. Trincomalee, Pasikuda and Arugam Bay are dry and hot, with 0.8 to 1.4 heavy-rain days in the month. The south and west coasts are in the monsoon and get 8.3 to 8.7 heavy days.
-
What is the weather like in Sri Lanka in July?
Two seasons at once. The east coast averages 33.9 to 34.7 C and under 1.5 heavy-rain days, while Colombo and Galle average 28.5 to 28.7 C with 8.3 to 8.7 heavy days. Sunshine is about ten hours a day everywhere.
-
Which coast should I choose in July?
The east coast. The south-west monsoon runs from May to September and hits the south and west, while the east sits in the lee of the highlands. Pick by coast before you pick a hotel.
-
How hot is the east coast in July?
Hot. Our ten-year records show a mean daily maximum of 34.7 C at Trincomalee and Batticaloa, and 33.9 C at Arugam Bay. Move early, rest at midday and keep water with you.
-
Does it rain in Arugam Bay in July?
Rarely hard. Arugam Bay averages 12.3 rain days in July but only 0.8 of them reach 10 mm, so most are short showers that pass in twenty minutes.
-
Is July the Sri Lanka school holiday season?
The July surge we measured is European, not domestic: the Netherlands arrives at 2.72 times its own average month and Belgium at 2.50. We did not verify Sri Lankan term dates, so plan around the European calendar we can measure.
-
What does Sri Lanka in July cost?
East-coast rooms are at their yearly peak while south and west hotels discount. We could not verify a traceable July 2026 rate, so we have not published a nightly figure.
-
How many days do I need for the east coast in July?
Ten days covers Trincomalee, Pasikuda, Arugam Bay and the hill country on the way home. Seven days works if you drop Pasikuda and fly or train straight back from the east.
-
Should I book the train in advance in July?
Yes. Online reservations open 30 days before travel and each leg needs its own reservation. The Kandy to Ella service is the first to sell out.
-
Is July a good month for the hill country?
It is workable rather than ideal. Nuwara Eliya averages 19.5 C and 19.2 rain days in July, so expect cloud and showers with cool nights, and pack a fleece.
How this guide was built
The climate numbers are ours. We pulled ten years of daily records, 2016 to 2025, for twelve places from the Open-Meteo historical archive, which is a reanalysis on a roughly 9 km grid rather than a station normal. We then computed the monthly means, the 1 mm and 10 mm day counts and the sunshine hours ourselves.
The arrivals figures come from the tourism authority’s country tables, parsed today and checked by re-summing the country rows against the printed totals. Road legs are our own OSRM measurements on the OpenStreetMap network, taken on 30 October 2026 and labelled free-flow.
The Sri Lanka in July numbers here are ours, and each carries the date we measured it.
If the month is still open, our best time to visit Sri Lanka guide compares all twelve months. For the mechanism behind the two seasons, read the Sri Lanka monsoon season explainer and the weather by month tables.
Where to go next
If you are planning the trip around this route, start with our ten-day itinerary and then read how to book Sri Lanka train tickets before the 30-day window opens. The train travel guide covers classes and routes, and the bus guide is the cheap way to cover the coast.
For the first and last miles, see the airport transfer guide and the tuk-tuk fare guide. If you are weighing a later trip instead, Sri Lanka in December covers the opposite season on the opposite coast.
