Sri Lanka in December is the busiest month the island has. Official tourism figures for 2025 put 258,869 arrivals in December, more than any other month and 31.5% above the monthly average. It is also the one month when the reliable coast and the crowded coast are the same stretch of sand.
We measured December for twelve places over ten complete years, and we pulled the year of arrival data from the tourism authority rather than guessing at it. What comes out is a month that is wetter than the brochures admit and sunnier than the rain-day count suggests.

Sri Lanka in December 2026: the short answer
Sri Lanka in December works on the west coast, the south coast and the hill country, and it fails on the east coast. Expect 17 to 23 rain days a month on the coast, but only 4 to 8 of them heavy, plus 9 hours of sun a day. Book the first three weeks if you can.
That is the whole decision. Everything below is the order to act in, because in December the sequence matters more than the shortlist. A hotel you cannot reach, or a train seat released 30 days out and gone in an hour, undoes a good choice of beach.
- Coast: west and south from Colombo down to Tangalle, plus Kandy and the tea country.
- Timing: the first three weeks of December cost less and move faster than the Christmas fortnight.
- Booking order: week, then reserved train seats, then hotels, then the ETA. Not the other way round.
Sri Lanka in December is a west and south coast month, and little else.
Sri Lanka December weather runs wetter than the brochures admit, and sunnier too.
Which coast does December work on?
December is the month the island inverts. The south-west monsoon is over, so the coast that was soaked in June is now the one with sun, while the east coast takes the north-east monsoon that runs from October into January.
| Region | Rain days (1 mm+) | Heavy rain days (10 mm+) | Mean high | Sun a day | December ranks |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Colombo and Negombo (west) | 17.0 to 18.1 | 4.6 to 4.7 | 29.6 °C | 9.3 to 9.4 h | 3rd driest |
| Galle and Mirissa (south) | 22.7 to 23.5 | 5.9 to 6.7 | 28.9 to 29.3 °C | 9.4 h | 4th driest |
| Trincomalee, Batticaloa, Arugam Bay (east) | 21.4 to 22.6 | 7.1 to 8.4 | 28.0 to 28.4 °C | 8.9 to 9.0 h | 10th to 11th driest |
| Jaffna and Anuradhapura (north) | 18.0 to 19.2 | 4.8 to 5.5 | 28.1 to 28.7 °C | 9.0 to 9.5 h | 10th driest |
| Kandy, Ella, Nuwara Eliya (hills) | 16.5 to 22.1 | 4.1 to 5.1 | 18.9 to 27.0 °C | 8.6 to 9.2 h | 4th to 9th driest |
The rank column is the part nobody publishes. December is the third driest month of the year in Colombo and the fourth driest in Galle and Mirissa, which is why the south coast fills up. In Trincomalee it is the eleventh driest, meaning only one month of the year is wetter there.
Sri Lanka in December rain is light, and it clears by evening.
Rain days in December are light, not lost
Eighteen rain days sounds like a washout until you split them by amount. Colombo records 18.1 days with at least 1 mm in December but only 4.7 with 10 mm or more. That is the inter-monsoon pattern: a heavy afternoon build-up, an hour of rain, then a clear evening.
In practice you plan mornings on the beach and keep the afternoon flexible. A rain day in our table means the gauge caught something, not that the day was lost.
Sri Lanka in December rain arrives in the afternoon and leaves by evening.
Sri Lanka in December sunshine holds up even on the wetter south coast.
The sun still shows up
December delivers 9.3 to 9.4 hours of measured sunshine a day in Colombo, Negombo, Galle and Mirissa. That is more than the island average for the year, and it is the number that decides whether a beach week works. Nuwara Eliya gets 8.6 hours, the lowest of our twelve places, because the hills cloud over by mid-afternoon.
Sri Lanka in December flips the island, so July advice misleads.
What flips compared with July
In July the east coast is dry and the south is wet. December is the exact reverse, and the size of the swing is large. Trincomalee takes 22.6 rain days in December against 6 or so in June, which is why a December beach holiday on the east coast so often ends in a car going the other way.
Sri Lanka in December crowds thin out after the first week of the month.
Sri Lanka peak season December demand is measurable, and we measured it in arrivals.
How crowded is Sri Lanka in December?
December 2025 was the single busiest month of the year, with 258,869 tourist arrivals. That is 31.5% above the 196,826 monthly average, and it is close to double the quietest month, May, at 132,877.
| Month (2025) | Arrivals | Compared with the year’s monthly average |
|---|---|---|
| December | 258,869 | +31.5% |
| January | 252,687 | +28.4% |
| February | 240,138 | +22.0% |
| November | 212,873 | +8.2% |
| October | 165,164 | -16.1% |
| May | 132,877 | -32.5% |
Peak season in December is therefore not a marketing phrase. It is a measurable 31.5% demand lift on an island whose hotel stock does not grow between November and December.
A Sri Lanka in December trip is busy, and January stays busy too.
Sri Lanka in December arrivals are not one crowd, as the table shows.
Who actually arrives in the surge
The surge is not uniform, and this is the useful part. We compared each market’s December 2025 arrivals with its own monthly average. Long-haul winter markets jump, and several European and Gulf markets actually fall.
| Market | December arrivals | December vs its own average |
|---|---|---|
| Israel | 3,515 | +71.5% |
| Czech Republic | 2,715 | +70.7% |
| Poland | 6,870 | +64.9% |
| Australia | 14,820 | +62.4% |
| Italy | 6,482 | +54.2% |
| Germany | 16,707 | +35.5% |
| India | 56,715 | +28.0% |
| United Kingdom | 20,535 | +16.1% |
| France | 7,270 | -20.0% |
| Saudi Arabia | 335 | -34.3% |
Two things follow from that table. The Christmas crowd is heavily Australian, Polish, Czech and Italian, which tells you where the pressure sits on the south coast. And the French, Spanish, Dutch and Gulf markets are contracting in December, so a Gulf traveller is arriving against the flow rather than into it.

Book Sri Lanka in December early if the Christmas week is the point of the trip.
New year in Sri Lanka fills the south coast for the final week of December.
Step 1: pick your week before you pick a hotel
The month is not one price. The arrival table above is monthly, so we cannot split December into weeks from official data, and we will not pretend to. What the market mix does tell you is where the squeeze lands and when.
School holidays in the southern hemisphere start in mid-December, and the Australian market’s 62.4% December lift lands almost entirely after that. Christmas Day and New Year both sit inside the final week, when domestic travel peaks on top of the foreign arrivals. The first two weeks of December are the same weather with a visibly thinner island.
The Christmas fortnight versus the first three weeks
If you want the south coast at its best price, arrive between 1 and 15 December and leave before the 20th. You get the same 23 rain days and the same 9.4 hours of sun, with the Christmas surge still ahead of you.
If you want the Christmas atmosphere, book that week first and build the rest of the route around what is left. Availability, not price, is the binding constraint in the last ten days of December.
Sri Lanka in December trains sell out at the 30-day mark, not later.
Step 2: book the reserved train seats 30 days out
Sri Lanka Railways opens online seat reservations 30 days before the date of travel. The reservation portal’s own FAQ answers it plainly: you can make an advance reservation 30 days prior from the date of travel. Not 60, not 90.
That single rule gives you a countdown. For a Kandy to Ella leg on 20 December, the seats open on 20 November. For 28 December, they open on 28 November. The observation carriages on the hill-country line are the first to go, and in peak season they go quickly.
- Set a reminder 30 days before every reserved leg, not one reminder for the whole trip.
- Reserve the return separately, because a return journey needs its own reservation.
- Keep the printed e-ticket, since the emailed copy is not accepted as a travel pass.
If your dates fall inside the Christmas week and the reserved seats are gone, the unreserved carriages still run. You stand, or you sit on the floor with everyone else, and you see the same country. Our guide to booking Sri Lanka train tickets covers both paths.

Sri Lanka in December sun gives you 9.4 hours on the south coast.
Step 3: build the route on measured road legs
Distances in Sri Lanka are short and drive times are not. We measured the legs a December trip actually uses with a routing engine on the OpenStreetMap network, so these are road distances and free-flow times, not brochure numbers.
| Leg | Distance | Free-flow drive |
|---|---|---|
| Colombo airport to Negombo | 7.5 km | 15 min |
| Colombo airport to Colombo city | 39.8 km | 44 min |
| Colombo airport to Galle Fort | 160.1 km | 2 h 19 min |
| Colombo Fort to Kandy | 115.1 km | 2 h 12 min |
| Galle to Mirissa | 34.0 km | 39 min |
| Mirissa to Tangalle | 47.2 km | 53 min |
| Tangalle to Tissamaharama (Yala gate) | 81.3 km | 1 h 19 min |
| Galle to Ella | 198.6 km | 3 h 07 min |
| Kandy to Nuwara Eliya | 76.0 km | 1 h 35 min |
| Colombo Fort to Anuradhapura | 208.0 km | 3 h 42 min |
The 3 h 07 min from Galle to Ella is the leg people underestimate. It is 198.6 km of mixed road, and it eats a full morning. In December the same leg slows again, because the south coast and the hill country are both carrying peak traffic at once.
Our rule of thumb for a December route is to add 20 to 30 minutes to anything over two hours, and to never put a long drive on the same day as a flight. For vehicle options and day rates, see our guide to private driver costs in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka in December paperwork is free for many passports, and still required.
Step 4: sort the ETA before you book anything
The Sri Lanka ETA is free of charge for nationals of 40 countries under a scheme in force since 25 May 2026, as published on the official ETA application site. It covers the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Poland, the Czech Republic, Switzerland, Australia, Canada, the United States, Japan, South Korea, India, China, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Oman and Kuwait, among others.
Free does not mean unnecessary. Every foreign national still has to obtain an ETA before arriving, including nationals of those 40 countries. The grant is 30 days with double entry inside that window, and a longer stay needs a paid extension.
Nationals outside the list pay a fee and follow the general ETA rules, so apply earlier than you would for a visa-free arrival. Our Sri Lanka ETA and visa guide walks through the application itself.
Sri Lanka in December cost is driven by the Christmas fortnight, not the month.
Christmas in Sri Lanka is a public holiday and the busiest travel week of the year.
What Sri Lanka in December costs, and what we will not price
Sri Lanka in December cost depends on one number you can now see: demand. December 2025 ran 258,869 arrivals against 132,877 in May, so you are booking into a month that is 95% busier than the year’s quietest.
Some of the bill is fixed by tariff or by policy, and those parts we can state. Bus fares are published by the National Transport Commission, which sets them for every route on the island. Reserved train seats are priced by Sri Lanka Railways per class and per line. The tourist ETA is free for 40 nationalities since 25 May 2026.
The rest we will not put a number on. Room rates in the Christmas fortnight move week to week, and any figure we published today would be wrong by the time you read it. We would rather say that than invent a nightly rate.
- Book first: reserved train seats, at the 30-day mark.
- Book second: south coast rooms for the Christmas week, before early December.
- Book last: the first two weeks of December, where the same rooms carry less pressure.

Sri Lanka in December favours the coast from Negombo down to Tangalle.
Sri Lanka in December requires a jacket only in the hill country.
Where Sri Lanka in December works, place by place
The regional table tells you which coast. These are the places within it that a December trip actually uses, with what the measurement says about each.
Negombo and Colombo: the soft landing
Negombo is 7.5 km and 15 minutes from the airport, and it records 17.0 rain days in December with 4.6 of them heavy. That makes it the least interrupted first night on the island. Colombo is 39.8 km and 44 minutes away if you would rather start in the city.
Galle, Unawatuna and Mirissa: the crowded sun
This is the stretch the Christmas crowd wants, and the numbers explain why. Mirissa sees 23.5 rain days in December but only 5.9 heavy ones, with 9.4 hours of sun a day. It is also 4th driest out of twelve months there, so December is genuinely one of the better months rather than a compromise.
Galle Fort is the bottleneck. Everyone stops there, it is the closest thing the south has to a city, and the difference between a mid-morning visit and a 4 pm visit is the difference between a walk and a shuffle.
Tangalle and the south-east edge
Tangalle is 47.2 km and 53 minutes past Mirissa, and it sits on the dry side of the same coast. From there the Yala gate at Tissamaharama is 81.3 km and 1 h 19 min, which is why the south-east corner works as a December safari add-on rather than a separate trip.
Kandy, Ella and Nuwara Eliya: the cool half
The hill country is the only part of Sri Lanka in December where you need a jacket. Nuwara Eliya averages 18.9 °C by day, which is 10 degrees cooler than the coast, and Kandy records the fewest rain days of our twelve places at 16.5. Ella is warmer at 23.9 °C and takes 5.1 heavy rain days.
A ten-day December route that fits the crowds
This is the shape we would book for a first December trip: land, drop south, climb, and finish on the coast you can trust. The drive times are the measured ones from the table above, and the order is chosen so the longest drive is never on a flight day.
| Days | Base | Why it sits here |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Negombo | 15 minutes from the airport, no long transfer after a night flight |
| 2 to 3 | Galle Fort and Unawatuna | 2 h 19 min down the expressway, then short hops of 39 minutes |
| 4 to 5 | Mirissa or Tangalle | 34 to 53 minutes along the same coast, still in the dry band |
| 6 | Tissamaharama | 1 h 19 min to the Yala gate for a morning safari |
| 7 to 8 | Ella | 3 h 07 min from Galle, or the hill-country train if you booked at the 30-day mark |
| 9 | Kandy | 1 h 35 min from Nuwara Eliya, breaking the climb properly |
| 10 | Colombo airport | 2 h 12 min from Kandy, the last long drive of the trip |
Two changes make this work in the Christmas fortnight. Book the hill country first, because Ella and Nuwara Eliya have fewer rooms than the coast. And keep day 10 loose: the Kandy to airport leg can double in time in the days around New Year.
What we could not verify
Three things did not survive checking. The Sri Lanka Railways fare PDFs and the Central Cultural Fund ticket pages would not load from our host on 28 October 2026, so we have quoted no train fare and no monument entry fee in this guide. The Department of Meteorology site also timed out, which is why every climate number here is our own calculation rather than a station normal.
We could not confirm the exact 2026 school holiday dates either. The January and February arrivals are almost as high as December’s, so treat “after Christmas is quiet” as false: the island stays busy into the new year.
Frequently asked questions about Sri Lanka in December
These are the questions the December search results keep asking, answered with our own numbers where we have them.
-
Is December a good time to visit Sri Lanka?
Yes, on the west, south and hill country, where December is one of the driest and sunniest months of the year. It is a poor month for the east coast, which takes the north-east monsoon from October into January.
-
What is the weather like in Sri Lanka in December?
Coastal December means 17 to 23 rain days a month but only 4 to 8 heavy ones, with 9.3 to 9.5 hours of sunshine a day and highs near 29 degrees. The hill country is much cooler, with Nuwara Eliya at 18.9 degrees by day.
-
Is it rainy in Sri Lanka in December?
It rains, but mostly in short afternoon bursts. Colombo records 18.1 days with at least 1 mm and just 4.7 with 10 mm or more, which is why a December day is rarely lost to rain.
-
Which coast is best for Sri Lanka in December?
The south coast from Galle to Tangalle and the west coast around Negombo and Colombo. December ranks third or fourth driest there, against tenth or eleventh driest in Trincomalee and Batticaloa.
-
Is December the peak season in Sri Lanka?
It is the peak month by arrivals. December 2025 took 258,869 visitors, 31.5% above the monthly average and nearly double the quietest month, May, at 132,877.
-
How busy is Sri Lanka over Christmas?
Busiest in the final week, when the December surge meets domestic Christmas and New Year travel. Australia lifts 62.4% above its own monthly average in December, while France falls 20.0% and Saudi Arabia falls 34.3%.
-
How much does a trip to Sri Lanka in December cost?
We publish no room rate, because December rates move week to week and a figure would be stale on arrival. What is fixed: the tourist ETA is free for 40 nationalities, bus fares are set by the National Transport Commission, and train seats are priced by class.
-
When should I book train seats for December?
Exactly 30 days before travel, because that is when Sri Lanka Railways opens online reservations. For a 20 December journey, book on 20 November, and set a separate reminder for every leg including the return.
-
Do I need a visa for Sri Lanka in December 2026?
Yes. Every foreign national needs an ETA before arrival, even nationals of the 40 countries that now get it free of charge. The free grant runs 30 days with double entry.

How this Sri Lanka in December guide was built
Climate figures are our own calculation from the Open-Meteo historical archive for 1 January 2016 to 31 December 2025, twelve places, Asia/Colombo time. We count a rain day as a day with at least 1 mm and a heavy rain day as at least 10 mm, then average across the ten years. The grid is about 9 km, so a coastal town is represented by the cell it falls in.
Arrival figures come from the tourism authority’s 2025 country table, which we summed across 191 rows to reach 2,361,909, matching its published annual total. Road legs were measured on 28 October 2026. The ETA and reservation rules were read from the official pages on the same day.
We measured Sri Lanka in December ourselves rather than quoting a brochure.
Where to go next
If December is your month, the next two reads are the month-by-month numbers in our Sri Lanka weather by month guide and the coast-by-coast rain pattern in our Sri Lanka monsoon season explainer. Our best time to visit Sri Lanka page answers the wider question of when to come at all.
For the practical build, start with a two week Sri Lanka itinerary, then check getting around Sri Lanka by train and airport transfers. Every guide we publish sits in the Sri Lanka travel guides index.
December rewards the traveller who books in the right order, not the one who books earliest. Week, then seats, then rooms, then paperwork.
