Most Sri Lanka 2 week itinerary posts read like a diary with the prices missing. This one is the version we would hand a friend: fourteen days, one loop, nine stops, and the operator’s own distances and fares behind every leg. It runs Colombo, Kandy, the cultural triangle, the hill country by rail, Yala, and then the south coast.
The good news is that a Sri Lanka 2 week itinerary of this shape is doable entirely on public transport. We set out the day plan first, then explain each window, then show what it costs and which month to pick. Everything below was checked on 7 October 2026, and where a number is our own arithmetic we say so.

What a Sri Lanka 2 week itinerary fits, and what it does not
Fourteen days fits three bases and two long journeys, and that is the whole secret. Add a fourth base and you spend the extra day inside a vehicle. A Sri Lanka 2 week itinerary that tries to reach Jaffna, Arugam Bay and the cultural triangle in the same fortnight is a tour schedule, not a holiday.
So this Sri Lanka 2 week itinerary keeps to the south-west half of the island: the coast, the hill country and the ancient cities. It is the loop that works in the December to March window, and it is the one most first-time visitors should copy.
| Days | Base | The leg | Mode | Published distance or time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Colombo | Airport to the city | Rail, bus or counter taxi | 33.5 km by road |
| 2 | Kandy | Colombo Fort to Kandy | Train | 120.74 km |
| 3 | Sigiriya | Kandy to the cultural triangle | Road | 3 to 3.5 hours |
| 4 | Sigiriya | Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa | Road, day trips | Local legs |
| 5 | Kandy | Dambulla, then back to Kandy | Road | Local legs |
| 6 | Ella | Kandy to Nanu Oya, then Ella | Train | 207.06 km to Nanu Oya |
| 7 | Ella | A full day in Ella | On foot and by tuk-tuk | Local legs |
| 8 | Yala | Ella down to the park gate | Road | 4 to 5 hours |
| 9 | Yala | A safari morning | Jeep | Half a day |
| 10 | Mirissa | Yala to the south coast | Road | 3 to 4 hours |
| 11 | Mirissa | The beach, and a whale morning | On foot | Local legs |
| 12 | Galle | Mirissa to Galle | Train or road | Coastal legs |
| 13 | Colombo | Galle to Colombo Fort | Train | 113.89 km |
| 14 | Flight home | Colombo to the airport | Road or rail | 33.5 km, allow 2 to 3 hours |
Read that table as a map in words. The route never crosses itself, it climbs once, and it comes home along the coast. That shape is what makes a Sri Lanka 2 week itinerary work, because it keeps every long journey inside a single day.
- Colombo, for one night after the flight.
- Kandy, the last city before the hills.
- The cultural triangle, based at Sigiriya or Dambulla.
- Nanu Oya and Ella, reached by the hill country line.
- Yala, for the park.
- Mirissa or Unawatuna, on the south coast.
- Galle, one night inside the fort.
- Colombo again, for the last evening.
- The airport, with a buffer.
Days 1-2: land, then Colombo to Kandy
Day 1 is deliberately thin. The airport sits 33.5 km north of the city, and how you cover that gap decides your first evening on any Sri Lanka 2 week itinerary. The counter taxi is a published destination card, while the 187 bus and the expressway coach cost a fraction of it.
We put the three side by side in our airport transfer guide, and the counter card itself in the guide to getting from the airport to Kandy. Sleep in Colombo or near the airport. No Sri Lanka 2 week itinerary should open with a climb into the hills on arrival day.
Day 2 morning: the train to Kandy
The Kandy line leaves Colombo Fort and climbs 120.74 km into the hills. It takes three to three and a half hours. Book a reserved seat if you can, because the unreserved carriages fill at Fort, and the better side of the train is the left one after Polgahawela.
Reserved seats open 30 days before travel, so the booking order for this Sri Lanka 2 week itinerary starts here. We cover the mechanics in train seat booking and the classes in the train travel guide.
Day 2 afternoon: Kandy, briefly
Kandy earns its one night. The Temple of the Tooth sits beside the lake, the walk around the water takes half an hour, and the evening drumming is worth timing your visit around. We would not add a second night here on a fourteen-day trip.

Days 3-5: the cultural triangle
From Kandy the road runs north to Sigiriya in three to three and a half hours. The triangle is three sites: Sigiriya rock, the cave temples at Dambulla, and the ruined city of Polonnaruwa. All three sit inside an hour of each other, which is why two nights here beat three rushed day trips from Kandy.
Sigiriya is the climb. Dambulla is the painted caves, and it is the one you can do in a hot afternoon. Polonnaruwa is the one people cut, and it is the one we would keep, because the ruins are spread across a plain you can cycle.
We did not confirm the current entry fees for the Cultural Triangle this month, so we are not printing numbers. The Central Cultural Fund sets them, and its site at ccf.gov.lk is the place to check before you go. Budget a full day for Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa, and half a day for Dambulla, which is the shape this Sri Lanka 2 week itinerary assumes.

Days 6-7: Kandy to Ella, the hill country by rail
This is the best train ride in Asia, and it is also the leg that decides your seat booking. The hill country line runs from Kandy through Nanu Oya, the station for Nuwara Eliya, and on to Ella. Kandy to Nanu Oya is 207.06 km and about six to seven hours of train; Ella sits a little further, at 271.59 km from Fort.
Fares are distance and class based, set by the operator, and they are far lower than the tour listings suggest. The rates below are the published ones from Sri Lanka Railways, read on 7 October 2026.
| Leg from Colombo Fort | Distance | 1st class | 2nd class | 3rd class |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kandy | 120.74 km | Rs 950 | Rs 500 | Rs 240 |
| Nanu Oya, for Nuwara Eliya | 207.06 km | Rs 1,450 | Rs 750 | Rs 360 |
| Ella | 271.59 km | Rs 1,750 | Rs 900 | Rs 440 |
A reservation is a separate charge, and it is the part people miss. On the Fort to Ella run it adds roughly Rs 2,800, Rs 1,800 or Rs 1,300 depending on class. Pay it anyway. Standing for seven hours through the tea country is not the memory you want from a Sri Lanka 2 week itinerary.
Day 6 evening: sleep where the train stops
Two sensible bases: Nuwara Eliya for the tea estates and the cold, or Ella for the bridge and the view. Nuwara Eliya is a taxi ride up from Nanu Oya station. Ella sits a short tuk-tuk from its own platform, which is why more people on this Sri Lanka 2 week itinerary choose it.
Day 7: a full day in Ella
Ella is small and the walking is good. The Nine Arch Bridge is a fifteen-minute tuk-tuk or a forty-minute walk, Little Adam’s Peak is an hour up, and a tea factory tour fills a wet morning. Keep day 7 free, because this is the one place where the plan should bend.

Days 8-9: Yala, and the road to the coast
From Ella the road drops south and east. Four to five hours gets you to the Yala side of things, and that figure is our own route research rather than a timetable, so add time in the wet season. It is the one leg of this Sri Lanka 2 week itinerary we would not cut close.
One night near the park is enough. The safari runs early, and the reason is the animals rather than the photographs: leopards and elephants move at first light, the gates open before dawn, and by ten the heat has flattened everything.
Two honest warnings. Yala is busy in the December to March season, and a shared jeep will be one of many. Choose a block away from the main gate if you want quiet. Also, the park is not a zoo, so a leopard sighting is a bonus rather than a promise.

Days 10-12: the south coast, and the Sri Lanka 2 week itinerary with beaches
Now the pace changes. A Sri Lanka 2 week itinerary with beaches is exactly this half of the trip: three days on the sand with nothing mandatory in them. The drive from Yala to Mirissa takes three to four hours, and the further west you go, the busier the coast becomes.
- Mirissa is the busiest and the easiest, with the whale boats and the beach bars.
- Unawatuna is a calm bay and a good base for a family.
- Hiriketiya, further east, is the quiet one the surfers found first.
- Tangalle is the long, empty beach between Yala and the crowds.
Then Galle, on day 12. The fort is a walled town rather than a beach, and one night inside the walls is worth more than two days further along the coast. Watch the cricket from the ramparts at sunset, then eat inside the fort. It is the stop most people thank us for adding to this Sri Lanka 2 week itinerary.

Days 13-14: Galle, Colombo, and the last night
The coastal line runs from Galle back to Colombo Fort, 113.89 km of it, and it is the relaxed way to finish a Sri Lanka 2 week itinerary. Sit on the right leaving Galle, because the sea is on that side for the first hour. The train takes about two and a half hours when the timetable behaves.
Then one last night in Colombo. If the evening is free, the Fort and Pettah blocks are worth walking, and our island transport guide covers the city modes. On day 14, give the airport two to three hours from the city door, because the expressway carries the same peak as everywhere else.
If we could change one thing on most two-week trips we read about, it would be the last day. A 02:00 departure and a 09:00 train do not belong in the same plan.
A Sri Lanka 14 day itinerary for first timers
If this is your first trip, a Sri Lanka 14 day itinerary should not be the ambitious one. Cut the cultural triangle to two nights, keep Ella, and give the south coast four days instead of three. You will see less and remember more, and the same advice holds for any Sri Lanka 2 week itinerary you inherit from someone else.
If you are searching for a sri lanka itinerary for first timers, copy the day plan above and then remove one base. That is the only edit we would make. Three bases in fourteen days is comfortable; five is a coach tour.
- Book first: the Kandy and Ella reserved seats, 30 days out.
- Book second: the first and last night, so the flights have anchors.
- Book third: the safari and any Sigiriya guide, once the dates are fixed.
- Leave open: every beach night. The south coast takes walk-ins outside the peak weeks.
If you only have 5 days: itinerary sri lanka 5 days, cut down
An itinerary sri lanka 5 days long is a different animal, so do not try to compress a Sri Lanka 2 week itinerary into it. Pick one half instead. Fly into Colombo, take the train to Kandy, then go straight to the cultural triangle and back to the airport. That is five days and one long journey.
The alternative five days is the coast. Colombo to Galle by train, three nights between Unawatuna and Mirissa, and a slow run back. Both work. What does not work is five days with Kandy, Ella and the beach in it, and we see that plan more than any other.
What the two week Sri Lanka route costs, by travel style
Transport is the honest place to start, because accommodation and food swing so widely. The two week Sri Lanka route below is priced from the published fares in our transport guides, per person, transport only. Compare it with the fare table earlier in this Sri Lanka 2 week itinerary and the arithmetic is easy to check.
| Style | Transport per day | Fourteen days | What it buys |
|---|---|---|---|
| Budget | Rs 700 to 1,600 | Rs 9,800 to 22,400 | Second and third class trains, ordinary buses, shared tuk-tuks |
| Mid-range | Rs 2,000 to 4,000 | Rs 28,000 to 56,000 | Reserved seats, occasional private tuk-tuk days, a few app rides |
| Comfort | Rs 3,500 to 6,000 | Rs 49,000 to 84,000 | A car and driver on the long legs, first class where it exists |
A driver for the whole fortnight sits above even the comfort band, which is why we usually suggest a car for two or three days rather than fourteen. If you want to price that, our private driver day rates set out what the quotes actually cover.
When to run this route: month by month
The route bends around the monsoon, so pick the month before you pick the flights. The Department of Meteorology publishes the monsoon calendar at meteo.gov.lk, and it is the source for the table below. It is also the single biggest thing that can invalidate a Sri Lanka 2 week itinerary, because it decides which coast you end on.
| Months | The dry side | What it means for this route |
|---|---|---|
| December to March | South and west coast, hill country | The classic window. Book the train seats early. |
| April | South coast, turning hot | The New Year holidays slow the roads for a few days. |
| May to September | East coast | The south-west monsoon. Swap the south coast for Trincomalee or Arugam Bay. |
| October to November | Neither coast reliably | The inter-monsoon. Rain inland and on both coasts, so build slack into every leg. |
Our month-by-month season guide goes deeper on rainfall, and it is the piece we would read before booking an October trip.
What we could not verify
Three gaps, stated rather than filled. First, the Cultural Triangle entry fees. They are set by the Central Cultural Fund and they change, so we point you at the authority instead of printing a number we could not confirm this month.
Second, the road times on the hill and safari legs. Those are our own research, not an operator’s timetable, so treat them as planning figures rather than promises. Third, this Sri Lanka 2 week itinerary is built for the south-west window. Travelling between May and September turns the coast half of it upside down, and we would rather say that than pretend one plan fits every month.
Frequently asked questions about a Sri Lanka 2 week itinerary
-
What is the best 2 week itinerary for Sri Lanka?
The loop in this guide: Colombo, Kandy, the cultural triangle, the hill country by rail to Ella, Yala, the south coast and Galle. It is three bases and two long journeys, which is what fourteen days comfortably holds.
-
Is 2 weeks enough for Sri Lanka?
For the south-west loop, yes. Two weeks covers the coast, the hill country and the ancient cities without rushing. You need three weeks or more to add Jaffna in the north or the east coast as well.
-
How much does a 2 week Sri Lanka trip cost?
Transport alone runs from about Rs 9,800 at the budget end to Rs 84,000 at the comfort end across fourteen days, using the published fares. Accommodation and food move the total far more than transport does.
-
What should I book first for a two week Sri Lanka route?
The reserved train seats. They open 30 days before travel, the Kandy and Ella services sell out first, and the hill country leg is the one part of the route you cannot improvise on the day.
-
Is 2 weeks in Sri Lanka too long?
No, and most people who say it was too long had too many bases rather than too many days. Cut a stop and the same fortnight slows down immediately.
-
Should I take the train or a driver for the two week route?
Both. The train for the hill country legs, because the ride is the reason to be there. A driver or the buses for the rest, because a car for fourteen days costs more than the comfort band in our table.
-
Can I do a Sri Lanka 2 week itinerary with beaches and the cultural triangle?
Yes. The plan above does both: three days in the triangle and three or four on the south coast. What you give up for the beaches is a second hill country base, not the triangle.
-
Which is better in two weeks, the south coast or the east coast?
The south coast from December to March and the east coast from May to September. The monsoon decides it, so the month comes before the beach. Run the route in the wrong half of the year and the coast plan inverts.
-
Do I need to book Sri Lanka trains in advance?
Reserved seats open 30 days ahead and close two hours before departure. Without a reservation you can still travel on an unreserved ticket, but you will stand on the Kandy to Ella leg.
-
What is the best month for this route?
December to March, when the south and west coasts and the hill country are dry at the same time. January is the busiest, so book the train seats and the first two nights well ahead.
