This Sri Lanka 10 day itinerary is the short version of the island loop we publish at fourteen days, trimmed to the four days most people have to give back. It runs Colombo, Kandy, the cultural triangle, the hill country by rail, Yala, and then the south coast. No leg on this route needs more than half a day in a vehicle.
Ten days is the shortest window that still fits both the hills and the beach without a rushed finish. Below you get the Sri Lanka 10 day itinerary as a table first, then each leg explained, then what it costs and which month to pick. Every fare and distance is dated, and anything we could not confirm is flagged rather than guessed.
If you have already read a dozen versions of a Sri Lanka 10 day itinerary and found them all the same, that is because most stop at the map and never price a single leg. This one starts with the numbers.

Sri Lanka 10 day itinerary at a glance: the route in one table
Read this as a map in words. The route climbs once, never crosses itself, and comes home along the coast. That shape is what makes ten days work, because it keeps every long journey inside a single day and never doubles back on itself.
| Day | Base | The leg | Mode | Published distance or time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Colombo | Airport to the city | Rail, bus or counter taxi | 33.5 km by road |
| 2 | Kandy | Colombo Fort to Kandy | Train | 120.74 km |
| 3 | Sigiriya | Kandy to the cultural triangle | Road | 3 to 3.5 hours |
| 4 | Sigiriya | Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa | Road, day trips | Local legs |
| 5 | Ella | Dambulla, then Kandy, then the hill line to Nanu Oya | Road, then train | 207.06 km by rail from Fort |
| 6 | Ella | A full day in Ella | On foot and by tuk-tuk | Local legs |
| 7 | Yala | Ella down to the park gate | Road | 4 to 5 hours |
| 8 | Mirissa | Yala to the south coast | Road | 3 to 4 hours |
| 9 | Galle | Mirissa to Galle, and the fort | Rail or road | Coastal legs |
| 10 | Colombo or the flight home | Galle to Colombo Fort, then the airport | Rail, then road | 113.89 km, then 33.5 km |
Three bases carry the whole trip: Kandy or Sigiriya for the middle, Ella for the hills, and the south coast for the end. Move base any more often than that and you spend the savings on road time. A Sri Lanka 10 day itinerary that changes hotel every night is really a coach tour with better photographs.
What 10 days in Sri Lanka covers, and what it does not
Ten days in Sri Lanka is enough for the classic south-west loop and a little breathing room at each end. It is not enough for Jaffna in the north, Arugam Bay on the east coast, and the cultural triangle in the same trip. Attempt all three and you will see the inside of a van rather than the island.
| Window | What it fits | What you give up |
|---|---|---|
| 7 days | Kandy, the hill line to Ella, and one coastal stop | The cultural triangle, and any rest day |
| 10 days | The triangle, the hill country by rail, Yala, and the south coast | A second night in the hills or on the coast |
| 14 days | The same loop at a gentler pace, plus Polonnaruwa at leisure | Nothing much – it is the version we publish in full |
The honest trade at ten days is nights, not stops. You keep every place on the fourteen-day route and simply spend one night instead of two in the hill country and on the coast. That is why this plan still reaches Yala and Mirissa rather than abandoning one of them.
A Sri Lanka 10 day itinerary also has to accept that it will rain on you somewhere, whatever the month. Building one buffer afternoon into the hills is worth more than adding a fourth base, and it costs nothing but a decision made in advance.
The 10 day Sri Lanka itinerary from Colombo, leg by leg
The order below is deliberate. Every long road leg follows a rest day, and the two rail legs are the only fixed timetables you have to plan around. Work through it once and the booking order later in this page will make sense.
Day 1: landing, and the run into Colombo
Almost every version of a 10 day Sri Lanka itinerary from Colombo starts at Bandaranaike International, 33.5 km north of the city by road. The cheapest way in is the route 187 bus or the Katunayake line to Colombo Fort; the counter taxi at the arrivals hall is the fixed-price option when you land after dark. Allow two to three hours from wheels down to hotel.
Day 2: Colombo Fort to Kandy by train
The Fort to Kandy line is 120.74 km and takes about three hours. Ordinary fares on the operator’s rate sheet are Rs 950 in first class, Rs 500 in second and Rs 240 in third. The reserved-seat charge is separate again, and it is the only part that sells out. Book the hill-country legs the day the 30-day window opens, not the week before you fly.
Days 3 to 5: the triangle, then the hill line
From Kandy it is three to three and a half hours by road to the cultural triangle, which is why the plan spends two nights at Sigiriya rather than commuting from the city. Day 5 is the long one: back through Dambulla and Kandy, then onto the hill line at Nanu Oya, 207.06 km from Fort on the operator’s own distance table.
Days 6 and 7: Ella, then the drop to Yala
Day 6 stays put. The Nine Arch Bridge, Little Adam’s Peak and the tea estates are all a short tuk-tuk ride from the village, and after two long travel days you will want them. Day 7 is the road down to the park gate at Yala, four to five hours depending on where you stop for lunch.
Days 8 to 10: the south coast, Galle and home
Yala to the south coast is three to four hours, which leaves you the afternoon at Mirissa. Day 9 is the short hop to Galle and its fort, and day 10 reverses the first leg: 113.89 km back to Colombo Fort, then 33.5 km to the airport. On a late flight, take the coastal train rather than the road.

The Sri Lanka cultural triangle itinerary that fits ten days
A Sri Lanka cultural triangle itinerary of two nights reaches Sigiriya, Dambulla and Polonnaruwa. It does not reach Anuradhapura as well, and pretending otherwise costs you a day you will want in Ella. Pick the rock and the cave temple on day 4, then Polonnaruwa on the morning of day 5 before you head for the hills.
- Sigiriya, at opening. The climb is short and the queue is not, so go first.
- The Dambulla cave temple, an easy stop on the road south.
- Polonnaruwa by bicycle, if your legs still have anything left.
- Anuradhapura, only if you extend the trip to fourteen days.
Entry fees for the triangle are set by the Central Cultural Fund and change without much notice. We have deliberately not printed a figure here, because the last published card we could confirm is out of date; check the fund’s own site before you budget. This is the one place on a Sri Lanka 10 day itinerary where we would rather send you to the source than give you a number that may have moved.

Sri Lanka 10 days on the hill country line: the classes and the cost
The hill line is the reason most people book this trip, and it is also the cheapest long leg. On the operator’s own rate sheet the full run from Colombo Fort to Ella, 271.59 km, costs Rs 1,750 in first class, Rs 900 in second and Rs 440 in third. The reserved-seat charge is added on top.
| Journey | Distance | First | Second | Third |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Colombo Fort to Kandy | 120.74 km | Rs 950 | Rs 500 | Rs 240 |
| Colombo Fort to Nanu Oya | 207.06 km | Rs 1,450 | Rs 750 | Rs 360 |
| Colombo Fort to Ella | 271.59 km | Rs 1,750 | Rs 900 | Rs 440 |
| Colombo Fort to Galle | 113.89 km | See the coastal line | See the coastal line | See the coastal line |
Reserved seats open on the official seat reservation portal 30 days before departure, and they close two hours before the train leaves. On the Kandy to Ella stretch the observation carriages sit at the back, and the second-class window view is honestly as good as the first-class one for a third of the money.
Reservations open 30 days before departure and close two hours before the train leaves. After that, the only seats left are the unreserved ones.
The seat reservation portal’s own rules, read 8 October 2026

A Sri Lanka 10 day itinerary with beach: where the coast goes
A Sri Lanka 10 day itinerary with beach works best when the coast comes last. Days 8 and 9 put you at Mirissa and Galle, which is close enough to the airport to make the final morning calm rather than frantic. Mirissa is for the beach and, from November to April, a whale morning; Galle is for the fort and the train home.
The Yala night before it is the part people argue about on any Sri Lanka 10 day itinerary with beach. The park is worth it if you want leopards, elephants and a genuine half day out of the vehicle. If you would rather have two nights at the beach, cut day 7 and go straight from Ella to the coast.

Safari permits are issued by the Department of Wildlife Conservation, and the Yala rate depends on the current permit card rather than on any published leaflet, which is why we have quoted no figure above. Budget for a jeep shared between two or four people rather than a private one.

What the Sri Lanka 10 day route costs, by travel style
Transport is the part of a Sri Lanka 10 day route that we can price exactly, because the fares are published. The bands below are per day, and the ten-day column is our own arithmetic on top of them, not a quote from anyone.
| Style | Per day | Ten days | How you travel |
|---|---|---|---|
| Budget | Rs 700 to 1,600 | Rs 12,000 | Train in third, buses, walking |
| Mid | Rs 2,000 to 4,000 | Rs 30,000 | Train in second, some tuk-tuks, one transfer |
| Comfort | Rs 3,500 to 6,000 | Rs 48,000 | Reserved seats, private driver on the long legs |
Comfort is not the same as fast here. A private driver on the Kandy to triangle road saves you a change, while the same driver cannot beat the train between Nanu Oya and Ella, so mix the two rather than buying one mode for the whole trip. On a Sri Lanka 10 day itinerary the honest saving is in the two rail legs, not in the hotel.
Booking a Sri Lanka 10 day itinerary: the order that works
A Sri Lanka 10 day itinerary has a booking order, and the calendar sets it. The two rail legs open 30 days out and sell out first, so they come before any hotel. Then the safari jeep at Yala, which is priced per vehicle rather than per seat.
Hotels are the easy part and come last. Outside the December and January peak you can plan a Sri Lanka 10 day itinerary a fortnight out without much risk. In peak season, reverse that and lock the rooms first, because this Sri Lanka 10 day itinerary runs through the island’s busiest coast.
Two habits are worth carrying. Pay for the safari in cash on the day, and keep a printed copy of any reserved-seat ticket. For this Sri Lanka 10 day itinerary we would book seats, then the jeep, then the rooms, in that order, every time.
Cutting the plan to ten days: the legs to drop first
- Drop the Anuradhapura detour. It is the single biggest day you can save.
- Drop the second night in Ella, not the day itself. You keep the Nine Arch Bridge and the tea country.
- Drop the Yala night, if you would rather have two at the beach than one at each.
- Never drop day 2. The Fort to Kandy train is the trip, and it is also the cheapest leg you will take.
Those four cuts turn fourteen days into the ten in the table at the top of this page, and they are the same cuts we would make if we were booking it ourselves. Everything else stays exactly where it is, which is why a Sri Lanka 10 day itinerary can still feel unhurried.
When to run this Sri Lanka 10 day itinerary: month by month
This route sits in the south-west half of the island, so it follows the south-west monsoon and not the eastern one. The Department of Meteorology outlook is the source for the table below, and it is the reason this Sri Lanka 10 day itinerary reads differently in July and January.
| Window | Weather on this route | Where to go instead |
|---|---|---|
| December to March | The dry window for the south and west, and the best time to run this plan | Nowhere – this is the plan |
| April | Inter-monsoon, warm and humid with afternoon storms | Move the beach days later in the month |
| May to September | South-west monsoon: wet on the coast and in the hills | The east coast, if you can change the route |
| October and November | Second inter-monsoon, the wettest stretch for this loop | Anuradhapura and the north instead |
If your dates fall in the May to September window, this ten-day plan is the wrong loop. The east coast is the dry half then, and swapping the route is a bigger change than shifting a single stop. Book the hills for the morning either way, because afternoon cloud sits on the tea country for much of the year.
What we could not verify
Three things are missing on purpose. Cultural triangle entry fees are not printed, because the figure we could confirm is stale. Accommodation and flight prices are left out, since no official source publishes them. And the Yala safari rate depends on the park’s current permit card, which we could not read this month, so we have not quoted it.
Frequently asked questions about a Sri Lanka 10 day itinerary
-
Is 10 days enough for Sri Lanka?
Yes, for the south-west loop in this guide. Ten days covers Kandy, the cultural triangle, the hill country by rail, Yala and the south coast without rushing. It is too short to add Jaffna or Arugam Bay as well.
-
What is the best 10 day itinerary for Sri Lanka?
The plan most travellers should copy is Colombo, Kandy, Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa, the hill line to Ella, Yala, then Mirissa, Galle and home. It climbs once and never doubles back, which is what keeps every long leg inside one day.
-
How many days in Sri Lanka is enough?
Seven days is the floor for a hills-and-beach trip. Ten days adds the cultural triangle and Yala comfortably. Fourteen days lets you keep two nights in the hills and two on the coast, which is the version we publish in full.
-
Is it worth going to Sri Lanka for 10 days?
It is worth it if you accept one loop rather than the whole island. The fares are low, the trains are slow but scenic, and ten days reaches the hill country and the beach. Trying to add the north or the east as well is what makes a short trip feel rushed.
-
Can you do the cultural triangle in ten days?
A Sri Lanka cultural triangle itinerary of two nights fits Sigiriya, Dambulla and Polonnaruwa. Anuradhapura does not fit, and pretending it does costs you a day you will want in Ella. Go to Sigiriya at opening to avoid the queue.
-
What does a Sri Lanka 10 day itinerary cost?
Transport alone runs from about Rs 12,000 at the budget end to Rs 48,000 for reserved seats and a driver on the long legs, using the published fares and our own ten-day arithmetic. Flights and rooms are separate and vary too much to quote honestly.
-
Should a Sri Lanka 10 day route end on the beach?
For this Sri Lanka 10 day route, yes. Ending at Mirissa and Galle keeps you close to the airport and turns the last morning into a short run rather than a long transfer. Beach first and hills last is the harder version to book.
-
Can a 10 day Sri Lanka itinerary start from Colombo airport?
Yes, and every version in this guide does. A 10 day Sri Lanka itinerary from Colombo starts at the airport, 33.5 km north of the city, and ends at Colombo Fort or the airport again. The first and last legs are the only ones that touch the capital.
-
Do you need to book Sri Lanka trains in advance?
For reserved seats, yes. Reservations open 30 days before departure and close two hours before the train leaves. Unreserved second and third class carriages need no booking, but you may stand on the popular hill-country departures.
-
When is the best time for this Sri Lanka 10 day itinerary?
December to March is the dry window for this south-west loop and the best time to run it. May to September is the south-west monsoon, so the east coast is the sensible choice then. October and November are the wettest months for this route.
How this route was put together
We built this Sri Lanka 10 day itinerary from the operator’s own published distances and class fares, our own routing on the OpenStreetMap road network, and the Department of Meteorology’s seasonal outlook. Where a number is our arithmetic, we say so. The two-week version of the same loop is on the site if you have the extra four days.
Where to go next
If this Sri Lanka 10 day itinerary fits your dates, read the fourteen-day version next for the fuller loop, then the transport guides for the fare detail behind each leg. The train booking guide walks through the 30-day seat window step by step, and the airport transfer guide covers your first night.
