Sri Lanka domestic flights are a small, seasonal network run by one scheduled operator, and the published fares start at USD 153 a seat. Cinnamon Air flies eight-seat Cessna 208 aircraft from its own terminal inside Bandaranaike International Airport. Everything else in the air, from helicopters to private charters, has no timetable at all. Sri Lanka domestic flights are also the fastest way to cross the island, and often the worst value, and this guide shows you which is which in September 2026.

Sri Lanka domestic flights in 2026: the published network in one table
One company carries the scheduled traffic. Cinnamon Air Sri Lanka, trading as Saffron Aviation, flies three Cessna 208 Grand Caravans: two amphibian aircraft that land on water and one wheeled aircraft that uses runways. Each seats eight passengers. Sri Lanka domestic flights on this network all leave from a dedicated terminal inside the Bandaranaike International Airport precincts at Katunayake.
The rows are the operator’s own winter timetable, effective 1 November 2026 to 30 April 2027, read from Cinnamon Air’s schedule and fares page on 28 September 2026.
| Route | Departs | Arrives | Frequency | Stops | Published seat fare |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Colombo (BIA) to Kandy, Victoria Reservoir | 10:30 | 11:00 | Daily | Direct | USD 153 |
| Colombo (BIA) to Sigiriya | 11:00 | 11:30 | Daily | Direct | USD 153 |
| Colombo (BIA) to Koggala, for Galle and Weligama | 11:00 | 13:15 | Daily | 1, via Sigiriya | USD 206 |
| Colombo (BIA) to Hambantota, Weerawila, for Yala | 11:00 | 12:30 | Daily | 1, via Sigiriya | USD 230 |
| Colombo (BIA) to Trincomalee, China Bay | 14:30 | 15:15 | Daily | Direct | Seasonal, ask |
| Colombo (BIA) to Pasikudah and Batticaloa | 14:30 | 16:00 | Daily | 1, via Trincomalee | Seasonal, ask |
| Colombo (BIA) to Castlereagh, Hatton | 10:30 | 11:00 | Charter only | Direct | USD 535 |
| Kandy to Hambantota | 11:45 | 12:30 | Daily | 1, via Koggala | USD 199 plus taxes |
| Sigiriya to Hambantota | 11:45 | 12:30 | Daily | Direct | USD 230 plus taxes |
| Hambantota to Colombo (BIA) | 12:45 | 14:05 | Daily | 1, via Koggala | USD 230 |
Read the fare column carefully. Those are the operator’s published rates for the season that ended on 30 April 2026, still carried on its price guide when we checked on 28 September 2026. The 2026/27 timetable rows publish times and frequencies but not new prices yet, so treat the figures as the current floor rather than a quote for your date.

What those fares buy, and what the second number means
Sri Lanka domestic flights on this network are sold by the seat on a fixed departure, one way. The 8-seat cabin is the whole aircraft, so a charter is priced for the plane rather than per passenger. That difference explains most of the confusion around Sri Lanka domestic flight prices, because a charter quote and a seat fare are not comparable numbers.
The two prices on every row
The operator’s price guide shows up to two figures per route: a list fare and a lower promotional fare for set date windows. Colombo to Sigiriya carried USD 153 as the list price and USD 100 as a promotion in low season. Koggala ran USD 206 against USD 110. Those promos are date-bound, so check the current window before you budget.
Seats, codeshare and where Sri Lanka domestic flights fares sit
- Seat fare. USD 153 to USD 230 one way on the main routes, before the routes marked with the operator’s own plus signs.
- Codeshare. All scheduled flights operate with SriLankan Airlines flight numbers, so an agent can ticket them beside an international leg.
- Charter. Castlereagh at USD 535 and the Castlereagh to Koggala and Hambantota runs at USD 642 are whole-aircraft charters, not seats.
- Currency. Fares are quoted in US dollars, so your card rate decides the rupee cost. Our Sri Lanka currency guide tracks the mid-market level we use for conversions.
Air time against the drive: the legs we measured ourselves
Fares mean nothing without the road alternative. Sri Lanka domestic flights save between 1 h 42 and 4 h 54 on the routes below, and here is how we measured it. On 28 September 2026 we routed each pair of aerodromes on the OpenStreetMap road network with OSRM, without traffic, and set the result against the operator’s published block times. The drive column is the honest comparison for a private car or a driver, not for a bus.
| Route | Published air time | Road distance | Road time we measured | Time saved |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BIA to Kandy, Victoria Reservoir | 30 min | 119.8 km | 2 h 12 | 1 h 42 |
| BIA to Sigiriya | 30 min | 151.8 km | 2 h 49 | 2 h 19 |
| BIA to Koggala | 2 h 15 on the daily rotation, 35 min airborne on the direct hop | 167.0 km | 2 h 25 | up to 1 h 50 |
| BIA to Hambantota | 1 h 30 on the daily rotation, 40 min airborne on the direct hop | 284.7 km | 4 h 00 | up to 3 h 20 |
| BIA to Trincomalee, China Bay | 45 min | 243.0 km | 4 h 33 | 3 h 48 |
| BIA to Pasikudah and Batticaloa | 1 h 30, via Trincomalee | 296.1 km | 5 h 28 | 3 h 58 |
| BIA to Jaffna, Palaly | No scheduled service | 384.8 km | 7 h 16 | Not applicable |
| Kandy to Hambantota | 45 min | 221.4 km | 4 h 20 | 3 h 35 |
| Sigiriya to Hambantota | 45 min | 272.3 km | 5 h 39 | 4 h 54 |
Two rows deserve a note. The daily Colombo to Koggala and Colombo to Hambantota rotations route through Sigiriya in the 2026/27 timetable, which is why their block times look long next to the operator’s own airborne estimates of 35 and 40 minutes. And the Kandy leg, which is the one people know best from our Colombo airport to Kandy guide, saves under two hours against a car, which is less than most people guess.

When flying pays, and when it does not
The maths for Sri Lanka domestic flights turns on party size, not distance. A seat fare multiplies by passengers, while a car or a driver day rate does not. We used the operator day rates we published in our private driver cost guide, LKR 14,500 to 24,500 a day with 80 to 100 km included and excess kilometres at LKR 145 to 245, converted at about LKR 330 to the US dollar.
| Party and route | The air option | The road option | What we would do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solo traveller, Colombo to Sigiriya | USD 153 a seat, plus taxes on that route | One driver day, LKR 14,500 to 19,500, plus about 52 to 72 excess km | Fly if the saved 2 h 19 is worth about double the car |
| Couple, Colombo to Koggala | USD 206 a seat, so USD 412 | One driver day, 167 km, about LKR 24,200 to 32,600 | Drive; the flight costs three to five times the car |
| Family of four, Colombo to Hambantota | USD 920 | Two driver days, LKR 55,800 to 79,000 on 285 km | Drive, and keep the difference |
| Couple, Colombo to Trincomalee | Seasonal fare, quoted on request | 4 h 33 of road at 243 km | Fly, and treat the fare as the price of a half day |
| Group of six to eight with a fixed date | A charter for the whole aircraft | Two vehicles, or a van at LKR 18,500 a day | Ask for a charter quote; filling the cabin is where it wins |
Two patterns fall out of that table. Sri Lanka domestic flights win when the road is long and slow relative to the air time, so Trincomalee, Batticaloa and the Sigiriya to Hambantota cross-island hop are the best cases on the network. Flying loses when a party of three or more travels a route a car can do inside one day, because four seats cost four fares while one car costs one. If your trip is built around a package rather than point-to-point legs, compare the flight against the inclusions in a tour package and against self-drive car hire before you commit.
The season decides your route, not your budget
Sri Lanka domestic flights follow the weather, so the timetable and the monsoon calendars in our month by month guide are the same document in two formats. The operator runs two seasons a year and moves the whole network between coasts. That is why Sri Lanka domestic flights to Koggala stop in May and start again in November.
| Season | Where it flies | What changes for you |
|---|---|---|
| Winter, 1 November to 30 April | South coast at Koggala and Hambantota, hill country at Kandy and Castlereagh, Cultural Triangle at Sigiriya | The seaplane side of the network is at its fullest, and December to February books out first |
| Summer, 1 May to 31 October | East coast at Trincomalee and Pasikudah and Batticaloa, plus Kandy and Sigiriya | A second daily rotation appears on the east coast routes in the June to August window |
| Both seasons | Colombo to Trincomalee and Colombo to Batticaloa | The east coast pair runs year round, which makes it the most reliable hop to plan around |
Plan the hop inside a route rather than around it. Sri Lanka domestic flights are worth most when they replace the longest drive of the trip, and our itinerary builder shows where those long legs sit in each trip length.

Where you leave from, and the 45-minute rule
Check-in closes 45 minutes before departure, which is the single most useful number in this guide. That short window exists because a domestic hop never touches an immigration desk or a duty-free hall. For Sri Lanka domestic flights the 45 minutes really is the whole process, with no queue to clear. The trade is that you cannot check in early and disappear; the domestic terminal is small and the boarding call is quiet.
The waterdromes and aerodromes in the booking system
Half of the seaplane Sri Lanka network lands on water rather than a runway, and the booking form is where that becomes concrete. The map behind the seaplane Sri Lanka timetable covers five water landings and eleven runways today.
- Water landings: Koggala Lagoon near Galle, Victoria Reservoir at Digana for Kandy, Castlereagh Reservoir at Hatton, Mawella Lagoon at Dickwella, and Lake Gregory at Nuwara Eliya.
- Runways: Sigiriya, Weerawila for Hambantota and Yala, China Bay at Trincomalee, Batticaloa, Palaly at Jaffna, Ratmalana in Colombo, Minneriya at Hingurakgoda, Ampara at Gal Oya, Anuradhapura, Vavuniya and Katukurunda.
- The base: the operator’s own terminal inside the Bandaranaike International precincts, so an international connection is a short walk rather than a taxi ride. Our airport transfer guide covers the ground side of that terminal.

Colombo to Jaffna: why there is no scheduled flight, and what to do instead
A Colombo to Jaffna flight does not exist on any published timetable, and it is the one hole in the Sri Lanka domestic flights network that travellers get wrong most often. The official schedule published by Airport and Aviation Services for Palaly lists only international flights to South India, both of them IndiGo, and no domestic carrier at all.
| Flight | Route | Days | Departs | Arrives |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6E 1177 | Chennai to Jaffna | Daily | 10:30 | 11:45 |
| 6E 1178 | Jaffna to Chennai | Daily | 12:30 | 13:45 |
| 6E 1187 | Tiruchirappalli to Jaffna | Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday | 12:55 | 13:55 |
| 6E 1188 | Jaffna to Tiruchirappalli | Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday | 14:40 | 15:35 |
Palaly still appears as a bookable destination in the operator’s own form, so a charter can be arranged from Colombo to Jaffna. The Sri Lanka Air Force’s Helitours wing also carries a published rate card for the run, at LKR 14,500 one way for an adult on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, but its own site now states that domestic schedule flights are not available, and its pages carry a 2019 copyright. We would not build a trip around it.
That leaves the ground. The drive is 384.8 km and 7 h 16 by our measurement, which is a full day, and the rail and intercity network is the sane alternative. Jaffna is a two-day trip, not a day hop, whichever way you go.

Helicopters, charters and the routes with no timetable
Sri Lanka domestic flights are fixed-wing and seaplane only, because no scheduled helicopter service exists on the island. A Sri Lanka helicopter tour is a charter or nothing. Helitours, the air force’s commercial wing, lists the largest domestic fleet on the island: MA-60 aircraft with 51 seats, MI-17 helicopters with 26, Y-12 with 15, and Bell 412 and Bell 212 helicopters with 10 each. Cinnamon Air sells charter and scenic flightseeing trips on its eight-seat aircraft.
Treat the Sri Lanka domestic flights helicopter charter as scenery rather than transport. The air time between any two points on this island is 30 to 90 minutes regardless of the machine, so the premium buys the view and the door-to-door convenience, not speed. Ask for the empty leg before you ask for a tour price, because repositioning flights are the only cheap helicopter seats in the country.
Cinnamon Air allows up to 23Kg of main luggage and 5Kg of hand luggage on board.
the operator’s own FAQ, checked 28 September 2026
Baggage, seats and the rules that catch people out
- Weight matters more than volume. The allowance published for Sri Lanka domestic flights is 23 kg of checked luggage and 5 kg of hand luggage per passenger.
- The cabin is eight seats. Once a date is busy it is genuinely full, so book before you build a day around a specific departure.
- One aircraft down changes the day. A three-aircraft fleet has no spare capacity, and a technical fault is a delay rather than a rebooking.
- Weather stops water landings. Inter-monsoon storms and rough reservoir water ground or divert flights, so keep a spare day before any international departure.
- Bring photo ID. Domestic hops skip immigration, so a passport is fine and a visa is not needed, but you still board against a name.
- Plan the last mile. A waterdrome drops you at a jetty, so a tuk tuk or a pre-booked car is the onward plan, not a taxi rank.
What we could not verify
Four things stayed open when we checked Sri Lanka domestic flights on 28 September 2026. The per-seat prices for Trincomalee and Batticaloa are not published, so we have not invented a range for them. Some routes carry the operator’s own plus signs after the fare, and we could not find a published definition of that marker, so we treat those fares as a floor. Whether Helitours still honours its 2019 rate card is unclear, given the notice on its own home page.
The fourth is Nuwara Eliya. A Cinnamon Air amphibian was involved in an accident while landing on Lake Gregory on 7 January 2026, and the Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka’s preliminary report on it is public. Nobody was hurt beyond the two pilots, no passengers were aboard, and the waterdrome is missing from the Sri Lanka domestic flights winter timetable for 2026/27. We could not confirm when or whether scheduled landings there return, so we have left it off the picture and flagged it here instead.
Frequently asked questions about Sri Lanka domestic flights
-
Are there domestic flights in Sri Lanka?
Yes, but only one scheduled operator. Sri Lanka domestic flights run daily on eight-seat aircraft from a terminal at Bandaranaike International to Kandy, Sigiriya, Koggala, Hambantota, Trincomalee and Batticaloa. Every other domestic service in Sri Lanka is a charter with no fixed timetable.
-
How much are Sri Lanka domestic flight prices?
Published fares for Sri Lanka domestic flights run from USD 153 one way on the shortest hop, Colombo to Kandy or Sigiriya, to USD 230 for Hambantota. Routes such as Trincomalee and Batticaloa are quoted by season, and charters for the whole aircraft start at USD 535. Promotional fares have been as low as USD 100 on some windows.
-
Is there a flight from Colombo to Jaffna?
No scheduled domestic carrier flies Colombo to Jaffna, which is the one gap in the Sri Lanka domestic flights map. Palaly’s official schedule lists only IndiGo international flights to Chennai and Tiruchirappalli. A private charter from Colombo can be booked, and the drive is 384.8 km, or 7 h 16, on our measurement.
-
Where do Sri Lanka domestic flights leave from?
Sri Lanka domestic flights leave from a dedicated terminal inside the Bandaranaike International Airport precincts at Katunayake. There is no immigration desk on a domestic hop, and check-in closes 45 minutes before departure. Some routes end at a waterdrome rather than a runway, including Koggala Lagoon and Castlereagh Reservoir.
-
Can I take a seaplane to Kandy?
Yes. Sri Lanka domestic flights to Kandy land on Victoria Reservoir at Digana, 30 minutes after leaving the airport, and the fare was published at USD 153 a seat. The alternative is 119.8 km of hill road that took 2 h 12 to route on our 28 September measurement.
-
Do Sri Lanka domestic flights run to the south coast?
They run in winter, from 1 November to 30 April, and that is when Sri Lanka domestic flights switch to the south coast. Koggala serves Galle, Weligama and Mirissa, and Hambantota serves Yala and Tissamaharama. Both appear in the daily 2026/27 timetable, and both were published at USD 206 and USD 230 a seat.
-
How much luggage can I take on a domestic flight in Sri Lanka?
Sri Lanka domestic flights carry a published allowance of 23 kg of main luggage and 5 kg of hand luggage per passenger. Ask about sports equipment and hard cases when you book, because the cabin is small and the aircraft is light.
-
Are Sri Lanka domestic flights safe?
The fleet behind Sri Lanka domestic flights is three Cessna 208 Grand Caravans, regulated by the Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka. The one serious accident in recent years was a landing attempt at Lake Gregory on 7 January 2026, in which two pilots were injured and no passengers were aboard. We report the record rather than rate the operator.
-
Do I need a visa or a passport for a domestic flight in Sri Lanka?
No visa is involved, because you never clear immigration on Sri Lanka domestic flights. Carry a passport or another photo ID, since you board against a name, and keep the boarding card for the return leg.
-
Are Sri Lanka domestic flights better than hiring a driver?
For one or two travellers on a long, slow road, often yes, because Sri Lanka domestic flights beat the car by hours: Colombo to Trincomalee is 45 minutes by air against 4 h 33 by road. For a family of four, usually no, because four fares buy a lot of driver days. The decision table above sets the two side by side.
-
Can I book a Sri Lanka helicopter tour?
Only by charter, because no operator runs a scheduled helicopter service. Helitours flies Bell 412 and Bell 212 machines with 10 seats each, MI-17s with 26, and fixed-wing aircraft for groups. Expect to pay for the whole aircraft and to move the trip if the weather turns.
